"Maud Martha" is a wonderful novel and a definate must read, for it addresses issues of growing up, but it also tackles race issues in the US. I found the previous customer review passionate, but for those of you waiting for Brooks's next book, you should know that Gwendolyn Brooks, who is known more as a poet, passed away this year.5/5(3). Maud Martha Brown is an ordinary African American girl who deals with racism and sexism in her quite ordinary life. She grows up, gets married, produces a daughter, and shows strength and even heroism in her everyday activities/5(2).

“True Confessions Of A Heartless Girl” ends tenderly but coming of age stories aren't my bag. I follow Martha Brooks as a fellow-Manitoban and the first authoress who encouraged my writing. One memorable tip was “Show a story”. How incongruous to subtle novels, that one about a girl getting things wrong was laid on thickly/5(7). The third result is Martha L Brooks age 70s in Park Forest, IL in the Park Forest neighborhood. Martha is related to Michael W Brooks and Angela L Watkins as well as 4 additional people. Maud Martha is the only novel by the poet Gwendolyn Brooks, telling the story of the life of Maud Martha Brown, a Black girl, and the African-American experience in s Chicago.
